Color Trends 2023

Color is back and it’s bold. Tired of neutrals? Looking for something more fun? 2023 is your year. There might be many people that won’t like to hear this next part but grey is out, color is in and if you still prefer neutrals, beige is back.

Color psychology, it’s a thing. Room color psychology is an integral part of your daily life, affecting your moods and energy levels with just the room color you choose for your walls. The colors of the rooms in your home also serve as a direct reflection of your personality. Color has the power to change the shape and size of furnishings, as well as the shape and size of the room itself. Color is vital to the human experience, through color, we feel; we communicate; we heal. Those in advertising use it to sell products; those in schools and offices use it to increase productivity. Unconscious or otherwise, color can evoke emotions, inspire reactions, and change modes of thinking. It can excite or soothe your mood, raise or lower your blood pressure, and even whet your appetite! Whether it’s innate or learned, it’s undeniable that color has a vital impact on how we go about our lives. It's all about finding the colors you respond to and that make you feel good.

So, how much do you love color in your home? Enough to put it on the walls, baseboard and trim like the video or are you a less is more kind of person? Designers follow the 60-30-10 rule. Simply put, the 60-30-10 rule is a decorating trick that allows you to put a balanced color scheme together more easily.

It goes something like this:

  • 60% of a room is comprised of wall space and large anchor pieces

  • 30% of a room is accent furniture, area rugs, wood trim, textiles, etc.

  • 10% is variety via decor, artwork and smaller items

So, if you love these new color trends of 2023 the good news is you can use it as a secondary or accent color, not the main one all over your walls, although the paint companies would love it if you did. A couple examples of the 60-30-10 method:

Let’s get into the colors. Below are Benjamin Moore, Behr and Sherwin Williams color trends for 2023.

Benjamin Moore’s color of the year is Raspberry Blush, be bold and put it on walls or use as an accent color.

Behr’s color of the year is Blank Canvas, this is for all our neutral lovers. The name says it all, it provides a blank canvas to build off of and add color in other ways.

Sherwin Williams color of the year is Redend Point. Minimal yet cozy, this color creates a comforting backdrop for the everyday moments that matter. Great on walls or as an accent color.

There’s really two different topics to discuss here when it comes to paint trends, colors for your own home and colors to sell your home. The decorating method of 60-30-10 is for your own home, when staging it’s different, 90% is neutral and 10% is accent. Buyers need to visualize themselves in your home, that’s hard to do if you have a raspberry blush dining room. Blank canvas is a great color to use for your main floor, it allows the buyer to feel like they can make it their home. Here’s some other great neutrals to use when painting to sell your home:

When marketing a product (your home) it is crucial to consider that consumers place visual appearance and color above other factors when shopping, 1% sound/smell, 6% texture and 93% visual appearance. 85% of shoppers place color as a primary reason of why they buy a particular product. A study by Zillow has shown that a fresh coat of paint could increase incoming offer prices on a home. They surveyed nearly 1,300 recent or prospective U.S. home buyers and found that certain hues could increase the offer price on an average house by up to $5,000.

Light blue was by far the most popular color for a bathroom. Survey participants who viewed a light blue bathroom claimed they’d be willing to pay more: a 1.6% increase in offer price or a nearly $5,000 increase in value on a $290,000 home, on average. One of the most popular is Sherwin Williams Sea Salt.

If you want to make your kitchen attractive to buyers, go with a white wall. According to the study, on average, a neutral light color greatly increases interest in touring a property. It also ups the likelihood of a potential buyer purchasing the home.

If you are going to go bold, the bedroom is the ideal room for doing so. The majority of those surveyed saw potential in dark blue. So much so that the color increased the average potential price they were willing to offer. One of the most popular dark blues is Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy.

The power of color is that it can completely alter your experience. You always want to ask yourself how you want to look and feel in a space and how you want your buyer to feel. Make sure your color choices work with your decor as well ― from the curtains and wall art to the rugs and furnishings.

“The right paint color in the right room can have a big impact on a buyer’s first impression of a home and how much they’re willing to pay for it,” Zillow home trends expert Amanda Pendleton told HuffPost. “Zillow’s interior paint color analysis found recent and prospective home buyers made assumptions about the home ― and the seller ― based on the colors they saw on the walls. It appears certain colors appealed to the most buyers because those colors allowed them to project their self-image onto a home and imagine themselves living there.”

Softer colors and a freshly painted wall itself look well-maintained, loved and provide a canvas for bolder colors of the buyer’s choice to be overlaid as an accent color, allowing them to envision what they can do with the space. When you get people starting to see this, a little bit of ownership can build, making it more likely they will want to take that a step further
